Organisers: South Australian Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI)

Chair: Bill Cirocco, Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure

Parents as educators

Many successful road safety programs encourage parental involvement in road safety education. A range of presenters will share:

  • What is being done in each state

  • What are the main messages

  • How this information is presented to parents

The greening of road safety

In 2009 South Australia will be releasing a new resource for primary schools that links road safety to the heath and environmental benefits of active travel. Other states have made road safety links to other areas of the curriculum. The workshop will discuss:

  • Why this is being done

  • The benefits for schools

  • What is being done interstate and internationally

Both topics will be explored in a workshop setting.

3. Engineers Australia Frontiers in Vehicle Safety Technology and Testing 0900-1300

4. Speed Enforcement 0900-1200

Organisers: SAPOL

Chair: Assistant Commissioner Grant Stevens, SAPOL

Summary

Improved speed enforcement is a focus of the National Road Safety Action Plan 2007 and 2008, as a key element within a comprehensive strategy designed to reduce casualties on Australian roads. This is supported by the generally accepted view that increasing the enforcement effort correlates with greater compliance translating to casualty reductions. This workshop will facilitate information sharing across a range of enforcement related activities that have proven or are likely to have a positive influence on road safety.

Issues for discussion include:

  • Intelligent Deployment

  • Speed Tolerances

  • Publicising Enforcement Activity

  • Role of Enforcement in Speed Education

  • Covert versus Overt Detection Methods

  • Use of Technology in Enforcement

  • Black Spot versus General Enforcement

  • Enforcement Officer Discretion

An expert panel will be convened to present an overview of particular issues prior to an open discussion involving workshop participants.
